Harrisonburg, VA — Harrisonburg is going head to head with 15 other North American cities in the 10th Annual Strongest Town Contest, and voting begins on Monday, March 3. In this bracket-style voting tournament, Harrisonburg will compete for the “Strongest Town” title by shining a national spotlight on the work it’s doing to become a stronger, more resilient city.
The competition is a great way for us to highlight the progress our city has made to being more livable. Some of the things we’ve done include:
- Public Works has implemented the neighborhood traffic calming program in three neighborhoods, with plans to expand to others.
- Public Works has also been adding bike lanes and reconfiguring lanes to reduce the amount of road space dedicated to automobiles
- The city took an incremental quick build approach to addressing traffic safety concerns on Federal Street downtown
- Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance, the local Main Street America program, sponsors events that close downtown streets to car traffic so local vendors and artists can perform or sell their work to a local audience
- Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition has made Harrisonburg a bike destination and organizes the annual Bike-Walk Summit
Additionally our own Group Livable Harrisonburg has:
- been instrumental in advocating for housing projects such as Bluestone Town Center, and Quarry Heights
- advocated in City Council for other projects and raised awareness about parking, walk-ability, bike-ability and dense housing
- partnered with Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition to promote an event last year where Charles Marohn spoke to a room full of city leaders about the Housing Trap
